Welcome to the public portion of the Wuikinuxv Nation Treaty website. We are a small isolated nation on the central coast of British Columbia in picturesque Rivers Inlet. The only ways into our 60-80-person community are by floatplane or boat.
We are in stage 4 of the 6-stage treaty process. We have completed steps 1 through 4: Statement of Intent http://www.bctreaty.net/soi_3/soioweekeno.html Framework agreement http://www.bctreaty.net/nations_3/agreements/oweekeno_framewrk.pdf We are currently in Agreement In Principle (AIP) negotiations with Canada and BC. We are hoping to complete AIP negotiations in 2010. Once AIP negotiations are complete we will be going through a ratification process with all of the people who are eligible to vote in the Wuikinuxv ratification.
We have a negotiation team consisting of a Technical Negotiator, Political Negotiator, Treaty Manager and an elected 8-member Treaty Advisory Committee (WTAC {contacts page}). The Negotiators work together with a briefing and opportunity for input from the elected members. The elected WTAC member for each region then attends a community consultation with the Negotiators. Consultations are held in 4 main areas, namely Wuikinuxv {link all four to contacts}, Port Hardy, Waglisla and Vancouver. The elected members also meet for times a year to strategise and deal with internal issues. We bring all interested people who are eligible to vote in our process in for our Annual General Assembly. We review the progress we have made in the past year and receive a mandate to continue negotiations in the following year. This year, we hope to be able to bring an AIP to the people to begin the consultation process leading up to ratification.
